Is it hip to be square again? Maybe according to Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. His new startup, called Square , is a mobile payments (credit card processing) system that appeals to small businesses. But is he targeting the right customers? I think we’ve all heard rumors of a credit card reader for the iPhone—and this is it. A small, white plastic cube plugs into the audio jack of an iPhone or laptop (with software planned for Blackberry and Android). It scans the card, geotags the transaction and emails a receipt to the buyer. And just to be clear, Square is an app for merchants , not a way for individuals to electronically zap their bucks into the nearest Starbucks to pay for their latte. And that may be the problem, too—because the product isn’t designed for big retailers like Starbucks. Its users will be smaller vendors, “who don’t qualify for accounts with traditional credit card processors because the would be deemed ‘high risk’ by these companies,” as Read Write Web puts it. According to the CEO of competitor Billing Revolution, Andy Kleitsch, that’s not going to be enough of a market, and bigger vendors just aren’t going to be interested in the product. RWW also notes the potential for fraud: Square will also have to deal with potential fraud. While we don’t know the exact details about how Square will operate, chances are that the company will have to keep a large reserve in an escrow account with the credit card processing companies that power Square’s back-end. Anybody who sits on a pile of stolen credit cards, Kleitsch pointed out, could use Square to run up charges on these accounts. Once the defrauded credit card owners dispute these charges, Square could be left with a large bill to pay. However, one would hope they’ve taken precautions against this. While Square’s website contends that processing card payments is “difficult, requiring long applications, expensive hardware, and an overly complex experience,” Kleitsch says that a payment terminal is typically free, with $20/month + 2% of all transactions as the monthly fee for the service. (While Square’s service is free, last time I checked, an iPhone runs $200, plus Square’s hardware investment, plus a monthly fee—AT&T’s$60 data fee. Ouch—unless you truly already need the iPhone for your business.) Although one of their examples is of a local coffeeshop (of which Dorsey is a part owner), Dorsey appears to be targeting vendors even smaller than coffeeshops as well—vendors that may or may not have brick-and-mortar establishments, like artists or flower carts (another of the examples on their site). What do you think? Does Square have the potential to take off—and if so, with small businesses or just micro ones?

One of the many business opportunities that have come about as a result of the Internet is affiliate marketing. Affiliate marketing has become one of the best ways by which people are making huge sums of money on the internet. It is sort of arrangement where someone who has a product to sell enters into an agreement with another person to help sell the product. This second person is known as an affiliate. This usually involves placing adverts of the product on website of the affiliate. The profit from the sales is shared among them according to agreed percentages. Types of affiliate marketing There are three main types of affiliate marketing. Pay-per-click This is where a product owner displays a link on the website of the affiliate. Once someone clicks on the link an agreed sum of money is paid to the affiliate. What is usually offered with pay-per-click is very small – one or two cents. Pay-per-lead This is just like pay-per-click, because here too someone must click on an advert. But pay-per-lead goes beyond this. Here the person who clicks must actually show that he is a potential customer through any of the following: they must join a mailing list, get some of the freebies being offered by the product owner or register to become a member of the site. The affiliate is reward for producing a potential customer. Pay-per-sale This is quite different from the two named above. In this case, the affiliate is paid a part of the profit if there is a sale as a result of his efforts. That means that unless there is a sale resulting from the link from the affiliate’s website, there will not be any earning for the affiliate. There are many benefits that can be derived from affiliate marketing. But there are also some disadvantages. Advantages of affiliate marketing Makes marketing easier With affiliate marketing, you as the owner of a product will not do much to market your product. Your affiliate will have that task. Even if you are doing much yourself, you have an added effort from others. The result is wider market coverage and more sales. Makes earning money on the internet easy For the affiliate it is a great way of earning income. You might not have a product to sell but you can delight in helping others make more sales whiles earning money. It is a good way of starting an internet business. You don’t need much capital to start this business. Disadvantages of affiliate marketing It is very difficult at times paying affiliates because they don’t really contribute to the success of the product. For example, in pay-per-click, the affiliate is paid once there is a click. Whether the click resulted in a sale or not s/he should be paid. Those few cents when they accumulate can lead to huge sums of money. It could ne frustrating for the affiliate too because sometimes for a very long period no one clicks on an advert, and therefore you don’t earn any income. It takes time years for the few cents to become soothing substantial. However, despite these many people have testified about the benefits they derived from affiliate marketing. For some, it is now a full-time job.

It is now obvious that the internet is becoming a more forceful avenue for marketing , and not many companies are ignoring it. In fact , there are businesses which have only thrived because of the platform of the internet. It does not really matter the size of your business for you to use the internet as a forum for your advertising. The good thing is that the internet has made it possible for many companies not to restrict their marketing campaigns to their regions of incorporation. One particular growing tool of internet marketing is the use of the social media platform. Social media marketing entails the use of instruments such as the social networking sites and internet forums to promote the business. You do not need to inject huge capital to benefit from the social media marketing. It is all a matter of you getting to be serious ‘with being social in business’. That actually means that you will need to ensure that you are focusing on social networking sites like the facebook, twitter, flixter , linkedin and such others. It means that you will be focusing on the networking on the sites for business as a way of marketing. This medium of marketing has a number of benefits. The following are some of the main benefits of using social media marketing: Low cost Unlike other marketing channels , social media marketing will not call for you to spend a lot of money on marketing. It may just be as easy as having an account on the facebook , and inviting friends that you will be updating to on what is new in your business. That will not necessarily require investment , and it will be more effective. Engagement of the customers This is a medium of reaching out to a customer and engaging them in a convincing manner so that they will be persuaded enough to buy your product. Imagine a system where friends are endorcing a product in a social networking site! It will simply be a way of getting immediate feedback from the consumers. Gives the product credibilty The most important part of it is that your product will be likely to be well advertised through a channel that will be equivalent to the ‘word of mouth’ marketing. You will be likely to give your product some credibility. Information spreads faster With the social media marketing , you will be assured that whatever thing you come out with in the market will easily get to the target audience and you will be likely to have immediate feedback. With that , you will be more likely to counter a negative feedback on the product before it may be too late to damage it in the social arena. Because of the above benefits and many others, a lot of companies are finding the need to have links to their social networking sites on their websites. Social media marketing will surely be the next major marketing avenue in the coming years.

This is the classic social media case study that finally someone has put a real face on. I read MG Siegler’s account of Comcast’s CEO Brian Roberts speaking with John Batelle of Federated Media and was getting lulled into the same Comcast story we have been reading for months now. While it is a nice piece of PR there is still an underlying reality that is not mentioned by many. TechCrunch’s Siegler starts the coverage innocuously Today at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts spoke on stage with Federated Media’s John Battelle . For the first part of the discussion, they talked about the usual stuff: the state of the industry, competition, and the like. The answers were pretty PR-friendly, as you’d expect. But a bit of a surprise came with Battelle asked about the role Twitter is playing with the company. “It has changed the culture of our company,” Roberts said. Comcast has for a while now been using Twitter to scan for complaints and engage with customers. The idea was not his, but rather rose organically when someone in the company realized that a lot of public complaints were being sent over Twitter. That’s the nice side of the story. Big company has customer service issues and the use of Twitter has made a huge difference in how they do business. Enter the platitudes for the poster-child of customer service Twittering, Frank Eliason. He says Roberts went on to note that “Famous Frank,” also known as Frank Eliason (Comcastcares on Twitter), now has 11 people working under him simply to respond to information about Comcast being broadcast on Twitter. Roberts says that it’s an entirely different kind of dialogue coming in then the usual phone complaints, and he seems very pleased about the work the team has done with the customers on Twitter. Now we hit the meat of the matter. Despite all of the positive vibe around using Twitter to change Comcast and the ability for a company to create a better customer facing effort, Siegler tells the real story that is the personal side of this whole thing. In other words, there may be more hype than reality to this whole story (shocking huh?) As a very unhappy Comcast customer, I’ve had a number of interactions with Comcast’s Twitter team. There’s no doubt, they are very responsive, and are trying to be helpful. The real problem Comcast has is that their product and all other forms of service are simply not up to par, to put it nicely (I often put it much less nicely on Twitter). Bingo! So is what Comcast doing with Twitter a more elaborate cover up for their apparent inability to bring their service in line with their new image as a customer caring organization or is it TRULY affecting the culture of the company? Cultural change would imply that the products get better and less fussing is required by their customers. Maybe C –level understanding of this kind of customer engagement and the ensuing publicity should go a little deeper than “Hey this makes us look good”. Maybe it would be smart for Comcast to address the issues that create the need for 11 people to handle complaints regarding their service? So this feel good Twitter story may just be another marketing / PR tall tale . That’s too bad. At least Frank responded in the comment section to Siegler’s dissatisfaction. MG, could you keep us up to date if the product eventually catches up with the customer service effort?
